To the manager who says I don’t need to explain my decisions . I say you do.
When things don’t work out, targets are missed and decisions are questioned the manager needs to respond. Simply saying it’s my job to make the decisions and I take full responsibility is not enough. Managers need to communicate their thinking not just their decisions. The team is more likely to accept the need for unpopular decisions if they understand the managers thinking. When no explanations are provided individuals become confused, lose confidence in the manager and start to think that things won’t improve.
Of course in exposing their thought process managers do open their thinking up to critical challenge and the possibility that things went wrong because their reasoning was faulty rather than the gods were against them.
